CEDAR-TIMED

The CEDAR-TIMED collaboration combines the ground-based datasets with data available from TIMED and other spacecraft. The TIMED (Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics) spacecraft, launched on December 7, 2001 and supported by NASA, is studying the least understood portion of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere, located at ~40-180 km above the surface. It provides continuous global measurements of such parameters as temperatures, composition, and wind flow. A network of ground-based observatories, sponsored by NSF through the CEDAR program, provides information about the Earth's upper atmosphere at fixed locations. Combination of continuous data coverage from ground-based instruments at fixed locations with global coverage from the TIMED allows researchers to pursue comprehensive global studies with unprecedented detail.
