SUMMER 2012
RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR UNDERGRADUATES
(REU)
at the
MIT HAYSTACK OBSERVATORY
Westford, MA
The MIT Haystack Observatory invites undergraduate science, engineering and computer science students to apply for summer research positions. The program extends from June 4 to August 10, 2012. Support is provided by the National Science Foundation's REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program. Women, minorities, and students with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
Haystack Observatory, located 40 miles northwest of Boston, is a research center engaged in radio astronomy, geodesy, atmospheric science, and instrumentation development for radiometry, interferometry, and radar systems. The Observatory instrumentation consists of several large radio and optical telescopes and radar systems, all equipped with sophisticated digital control and data processing systems.
Projects in astronomy, atmospheric sciences and engineering proposed for summer 2012 are listed below:
- Characterizing Planetary Wave Signatures in the Ionosphere
- Exploring the Extended Mass Loss Histories of Red Giants
- Observing Black Holes with the Event Horizon Telescope
- Development of a Near-field Holographic Imaging Technique for Radio Telescope Thermal and Gravitational Deformation Characterization
- Development of a New Generation Small Radio Telescope (SRT)
- Advanced Geospace Software Radar
- Advanced Digital Receiver for Distributed Instrument Arrays
- Low Cost GPS Synchronization for Distributed Instrument Arrays
Students majoring in Astronomy, Space Physics, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and several other fields have enjoyed working in this REU program over the past two decades. In recent years, their summer projects have been archived on the web.
See Information on the 2012 REU Program or our REU application packet for specific details about this year's program. For further information please contact reuhaystack@haystack.mit.edu or call 781-981-5400. Also check out the MIT Haystack Observatory's web pages for particulars on the various projects underway at Haystack.
Support for the Haystack REU program is provided by the National Science Foundation through the Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program. The National Science Foundation, which sponsors this program, requires U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency to qualify for positions supported under the REU Program. Undergraduate students eligible for this program must not have graduated prior to the start of the summer internship in June 2012.
