Scientific research at the MIT Haystack Observatory is strongly coupled with major technology and instrumentation development that advances the capabilities of the techniques used in the Haystack's various research disciplines and enables the accomplishment of its scientific goals.
The current technological programs include:
- Design and implementation of radio arrays operating at low frequencies,
- Wideband signal processing, wideband data recording, and high speed data transport for very long baseline interferometry (VLBI),
- Development of ionospheric radar measurement techniques and distributed instrumentation, and
- Dissemination of open source software systems for radar applications.
